Field guide

From a spreadsheet to flashcards you can study and keep

Preparing a CSV or tab-delimited file, loading it into the Flashcard Creator, studying with honest "got it / again" marks, and downloading the deck and a notes page before you close the tab. Screenshots sit behind the same "More detailed info" toggles the other field guides use.

Optional · About this tool

Why a file, and why does the deck disappear?

Short version: your items never leave your computer, so there is no account and nothing to sync. The trade-off is that the deck only lives in the open tab until you download it.

More detailed infoLess info

Most people already keep study items in a spreadsheet, a notes app, or a list a classmate shared. Rather than asking you to retype them into a flashcard app, this tool reads the file you already have. The file is read by your browser. It is never uploaded to Deliberate Learners, and nothing is stored on a server.

That is also why the deck is ephemeral: the open tab is the only place it exists. Reloading or closing the page clears it, and your browser warns you first if you haven't downloaded it. The two downloads in Part 4 are ordinary HTML files, so you can keep them, email them, or put them on a USB stick, and they open without Deliberate Learners or an internet connection.

Part 1

Prepare your file. One card per row, in any spreadsheet app, saved as CSV or tab-delimited text.

01

Put one card on each row

Four columns, in this order: front, back, hint, topic. Only the first two are required.

More detailed infoLess info
ColumnWhat goes in itRequired?
1. FrontThe question, term, or prompt you see firstYes
2. BackThe answer or definitionYes
3. HintA nudge you can reveal before flipping, like a mnemonic or the first letterNo
4. TopicA chapter, lesson, or category. Topics group the notes page and appear on each cardNo
front,back,hint,topic
CEDAW,"UN treaty against discrimination against women, adopted 1979",International Bill of Rights for Women,Laws
RA 9710,Magna Carta of Women (2009),Enacted in 2009,Laws
Primary sex characteristics,Reproductive organs present from birth,,Lesson 2

Rows with an empty front or back are skipped, and the tool tells you which ones. Leave hint or topic blank on any row that doesn't need one, as in the last row above. Columns beyond these four are ignored unless you assign them in Part 2.

Want a starting point? The tool has sample CSV and tab-delimited downloads under the drop area. Open one in your spreadsheet app and replace the rows with your own.

02

Save it as CSV or tab-delimited text

Not .xlsx. Every spreadsheet app can save or download a plain-text copy, and that is the file you load.

More detailed infoLess info
AppHow to save a copy the tool can read
ExcelFile › Save As, then choose CSV UTF-8 (Comma delimited) or Text (Tab delimited)
Google SheetsFile › Download › Comma-separated values (.csv) or Tab-separated values (.tsv)
Apple NumbersFile › Export To › CSV, with text encoding set to Unicode (UTF-8)
LibreOffice CalcFile › Save As › Text CSV, with character set UTF-8
A text editorType the rows yourself and save as .csv, .tsv, or .txt

UTF-8 matters if your cards contain accents, symbols, or non-English text. Other encodings turn characters like é into é. The separator can be a comma, tab, semicolon, or pipe (|), and the tool detects which one you used.

03

Handle commas, quotes, and line breaks

If a cell contains a comma, wrap it in double quotes, or save as tab-delimited and don't worry about it.

More detailed infoLess info

Spreadsheet apps add the quotes for you when they save a CSV, so this only matters when you type a file by hand. The rules are the standard CSV ones:

  • A cell containing a comma goes in double quotes: "Education, employment, health"
  • A double quote inside a quoted cell is written twice: "the ""comprehensive"" law"
  • A line break inside a quoted cell is kept, so answers can span several lines
  • In a hand-typed file, \n inside a cell also becomes a line break

Tab-delimited files sidestep all of this, because definitions rarely contain tab characters. If your answers are full of commas, choose tab-delimited when you save.

04

Add a header row if you like

Optional. With one, the tool matches columns by name, so they can be in any order.

More detailed infoLess info

These header names are recognized, in any capitalization:

RoleHeader names
Frontfront, question, term, q, prompt, word, concept, cue
Backback, answer, definition, a, response, meaning, explanation
Hinthint, clue, mnemonic, tip
Topictopic, category, section, chapter, lesson, tag, deck, unit, module, group

Without a header, the columns are read in the order from step 01. Either way, you can reassign any column in the next part.

Part 2

Load and check. Everything below happens inside flashcard-creator.html, entirely in your browser.

01

Drop the file in, or choose it

Drag the file onto the dashed box, click the box to pick it, or paste the rows as text.

More detailed infoLess info

Files up to 5 MB are accepted, which is thousands of cards. Or paste the text instead opens a box for rows copied straight from a spreadsheet: a copied range pastes as tab-delimited text, which the tool reads correctly. The ↺ button at the top right starts over, and 🌙 switches between light and dark mode.

02

Check the columns

Confirm the separator, whether the first row is a header, and which column is the front, back, hint and topic. The preview updates as you change them.

More detailed infoLess info

The line at the top right, such as 9 rows · 4 columns · comma, is the quickest sanity check. Deck title starts as the file name. Change it to something you'll recognize later, because it becomes the title of both downloads.

Check the columns step: deck title, separator set to detect automatically, header checkbox ticked, four column pickers, and a preview of the first five cards
Everything detected correctly: header ticked, four columns mapped

An amber box under the preview flags anything worth a second look:

  • Rows skipped: the front or back was empty, with the file row numbers so you can find them
  • Everything is in one column: the separator is wrong, so pick it by hand
  • Duplicate fronts: two cards ask the same thing. They are kept, but you may want to merge them
  • Front and Back use the same column: fix the pickers before building
03

Build the flashcards

One click. The deck appears below, ready to study.

Part 3

Study. Say the answer out loud or in your head before you flip, then be honest with the marks.

01

Answer first, then flip

Click the card or press Space to flip. ← and → move between cards.

More detailed infoLess info

Recognizing an answer after you see it feels like knowing it, but it isn't. Commit to an answer before flipping, even a wrong one: the attempt is what makes it stick. The topic appears in the card's top-right corner.

02

Mark each card "Got it" or "Again"

The tally and progress bar fill as you go. At the end, review only the cards you marked "Again".

More detailed infoLess info

Mark "Got it" only if you had the answer before flipping. Anything slow, partial, or lucky is "Again". In "Again" mode, a card you now know drops out of the pile, so the pile shrinks until it's empty. Start over clears every mark.

03

Change how you study

Shuffle, show hints, flip the deck to answer-first, or show only "Again" cards. It works the same on a phone.

More detailed infoLess info
  • Shuffle: new random order, back to card 1. Use it once you know the deck in file order.
  • Show hints: shows each card's hint on the front. It only appears when your file has hints.
  • Answer first: shows the back and asks for the front. It's harder, and good for vocabulary and definitions.
  • Only "Again" cards: limits the deck to cards you marked "Again".

Part 4

Keep a copy. Two downloads, both single HTML files that work offline.

01

Download the flashcards

The same study deck as a single file you can open anytime, share, or put on your own site.

More detailed infoLess info

The file is named after your deck title, for example gender-and-society-sample-deck-flashcards.html. It has the same flip, keys, marks, and options as the tool, plus a light/dark switch. Your "Got it / Again" marks are not saved into it: each time you open the file, you start a fresh pass.

More detailed infoLess info

By topic keeps your file's order within each topic, with a row of topic links at the top. If your file has no topic column, this view is labeled In order. A–Z sorts every entry by its front, with a letter bar for jumping. The search box filters either view as you type. To make a PDF, use your browser's Print and choose "Save as PDF": the buttons and search box are left off the printout.

Download before you leave the page

The deck only exists in the open tab. Reloading, closing, or pressing ↺ clears it. Your browser asks before leaving if you haven't downloaded yet, but that warning is easy to click through. When in doubt, download both files: they are small.
